A hand-painted Kutani ware yunomi by Toujudo, featuring Katsushika Hokusai’s iconic The Great Wave off Kanagawa. The dramatic blue wave wraps around the warm white surface, with wooden boats beneath its crest and Mount Fuji appearing quietly in the distance.
First published in the early 1830s as part of Hokusai’s celebrated series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, The Great Wave off Kanagawa has become one of the world’s most recognisable works of Japanese visual art.
Here, the composition is individually painted by Toujudo artisans using the vivid overglaze enamel tradition associated with Kutani ware. The cup’s softly textured surface and gently shaped silhouette lend a natural ceramic character to the detailed artwork.
Made in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, the historic home of Kutani ware for over 350 years.
As each piece is painted and finished by hand, variations in colour, brushwork, texture and detailing may occur. These differences are part of the individual character of handmade Japanese pottery.
