Yakishime Arita Ware Coffee Cup & Saucer - Bellflower (Indigo)

A Japanese ceramic coffee cup and saucer set featuring a hand-painted bellflower motif in soft purple and green, finished in a deep indigo blue.

The flower is known in Japanese as Hotarubukuro (蛍袋), a bell-shaped flower whose name literally means “firefly pouch,” inspired by its softly hanging form.

The cup has a gently flared, bell-shaped silhouette with a scalloped rim, paired with a matching saucer. The surface has a natural, slightly textured feel that highlights the character of the clay.

This cup is made using yakishime, a traditional technique in which clay is fired slowly at a high temperature without an overall glaze. The natural colour and texture of the clay are shaped by the flame and ash inside the kiln, giving every piece its own unique appearance. Over time, the surface may develop a deeper, softer sheen through use.

Each design is painted individually by hand, making every cup one of a kind.
